Employers and Business Owners
Did you know that the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 requires all employers to prevent, or reduce, risks of hearing loss in employees? The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimate that one million UK workers are exposed to noise levels that might damage their hearing. According to the TUC, over 170,000 UK workers already suffer deafness, tinnitus or other ear conditions.
How do you know if your business needs to comply?
The new regulations came into force in 2006. If your business has employees who are frequently exposed to noise louder than the first and second action levels of 80 and 85dB, you must comply with the rules. Typically noise at work comes from machinery, but employees in industries as varied as food production, manufacturing, music/entertainment and many more, are all potentially at risk.
What happens if you do not comply with the new regulations?
We live in a litigatious society, and non compliance with the new Act (where your employees are exposed to a noise risk), means you take the risk of expensive litigation. The cost of settling an industrial deafness claim could be between £5,000 and £250, 000. How can you comply with the new regulations and safeguard your employees? The Industrial Audiometry Consultancy can help. Our accurate and dependable hearing assessments can be carried out on your premises. The typical cost of a hearing test is only £40 and we can test up to ten employees within a 3.5 hour session.
